May/June 2006
Took a brief respite in May to record my next project in Nashville with producer Neilson Hubbard (Glen Phillips/Toad The Wet Sproket, Garrison Starr, Strays Don't Sleep). It went (and is still going...) beautifully. A cool marriage of Americana roots and pop, with my soulful croon sittin' on top. I whittled the record down from about 25 tunes, many of which I've been playing live, a few I wrote a day or so before the recordings. Some great musicians (people who play with Josh Rouse, Strays Don't Sleep, John Cale, David Mead and many more) came in and brought a beautiful energy to it. Taking this step to work with a new producer and bring my music outside of its normal surroundings has been everything I hoped it would be: validating, envigorating, curious, strange and satisfying, to name a few. I'm taking my time with the mixes and release plans, and everyone involved is really busy, so I'm not sure at the moment when you can get your hands and ears on it. Thanks so much to everyone for your interest and support. I can't wait to to get this to you. Stay tuned, I'll keep you posted.
The Writer's Hang is back in action June 1. We've got some excellent people and shows coming...and a few new twists. As you probably know, The Hang has not only put on some of the most unique and special performances by some of the best 'slightly below the radar' artists in the country...but we've also instigated some of the most exciting spontaneous musical adventures...i.e. "jams." The vibe and energy in the room always take a step up when two or more musicians start communicating in the moment beyond words. When it's right, it's never a forced thing or something you can "make happen." But if you've been around as long as I have, you figure out a way to set up a situation to "let it happen" organically. With this in mind, I'm starting to "officially" invite some of the amazing players I know (and I know a lot of them) to be involved in The Hang performances. I wanted to make room for not only world-class songwriters, but world-class instrumentalists (many of whom are excellent songwriters, too). It could be a lot of fun, and further grow and embrace our community of amazing talent. NJ-based ace guitarist Jason Loughlin will help us kick this off on June 1...
